More than half of fatherless households are poverty stricken: 54.6%
You would not know simply by looking at the children that we help that they are underprivileged: they don’t wear tattered clothing, and neither are they emaciated. On the contrary, because healthier foods are more expensive, some of these children are actually overweight. Nonetheless, 1 in 6 Japanese children are said to be living in poverty. Due to economic hardship, these children miss out on the normal opportunities that are guaranteed to their peers.

Letters from the food bank’s beneficiaries
Everyone,Thank you so much for the food donation. As a single parent raising two children and working full time, every day is filled with anxiety. When I received the donation and your kind letter, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Now I always carry the letter with me; It’s such a comfort to read it when I am feeling discouraged. I am reminded that I’m not alone.
To us, your bi-monthly delivery box is more like a treasure chest. My daughter looks forward to it every time, because she can’t wait to receive each week’s special snacks. I can also rest easy knowing that we will always receive rice. We will continue to look forward to your support with great gratitude.Thank you so much.
A child’s letter
Everyone at the Food Bank,Thank you for the rice and soy sauce presents! We made rice balls and ate them together. It was so yummy. And there was a lot of sweets too! I’m can’t wait to get the next box!
According to Unicef, economic disparity among children in Japan is 34th out of the 41 developed countries surveyed, ranking the 8th from the bottom. Despite this, poverty among Japanese children is difficult to detect, and little support is able to reach them. Given this discouraging information, we decided to initiate the ‘Food Bank Children’s Support Program’ to provide food for children during the summer months when school lunch is not available. No one wants a society where children don’t know if they’ll have food the next day. We should all work together, and do whatever we can, right now. KEIKO YONEYAMA
